SIYAZENZELA SEWING & BEADING PROJECT

Siyazenzela means "We are doing it for ourselves".  This inspirational name came from the two women who started the sewing and beading project from their homes in the Vrygond township.  In May 2011, the women brought their own sewing machines to Where Rainbows Meet and started working in one of the shipping containers and even creating their own store.  The Siyazenzela project has expanded immensely helping to provide sewing and beading training for 30 women.  The participants receive a small stipend, a hot meal every day, as well as training covering life skills, English, and computers.  Our objective is to develop sewing and beading into a CMT (Cut, Make & Trim) operation, so our ladies can start earning really decent wages.

These incredible ladies love being creative and turning their ideas into functional products.  On request, they made school uniforms – even some skirts and dresses. Then a big customer, MADWA, arrived at Siyazenzela for whom the ladies made napkins and scatter cushions that were sold as far afield as London and New York.  Come stop by and check out the store and these amazing women.
